Unfortunately, Virginia is on the verge of an extreme shortage of nurses. Facts states that there are only 624 nurses caring for 100,000 people. That is a big deficit if you compare it to the country wide ratio of 746 per 100,000. But it does not stop there. A few years ago the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Virginia held the 40th spot in nursing shortage. This year it is at the 45th spot. And the problem will get worse because about 16 percent of the nurses will turn 65 years in age by 2028. With about a million citizens ready to avail of healthcare because of the Affordable Care Act, more nurses are needed.
But above everything else, the main reason for the impending shortage is that a good percentage of the nurses are aging. Today, the median age of the workforce is an old 49. A good number have already reached 65 with retirement looming soon.
At this point, state officials have laid out different solutions to solve this problem. Recruitment is the main option. A lot of nurses are seeing additional duties to help increase satisfaction levels. The state is also looking at inviting more men to take up nursing. This should augment the meager 6 percent presence of men nurses.
The nursing shortage dilemma in the state is a complicated situation which may require more than one major solution. There is a big number of people who want to get into nursing school. The sad part is that a number of schools have no choice but to turn away applicants. Stats show that in the 19 nursing schools located in Virginia that are affiliated with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing there is a combined 9,129 nursing students enrolled. But there are 1,595 that were denied entry. The reason is that there is a shortage of Nurse Educators in these schools. Current Nurse Educators are also aging.
