The Best Nursing Schools in Massachusetts

Reports have it the problem of nursing shortage in the state of Massachusetts is at an all time high rate. This report is based on research done with the cooperation of 76 healthcare facilities in state. Between the years 2010 and 2011 alone, a percentage hike from 3 to 3.9 percent was recorded with regards to the deficiency in the number of registered nurses in the workforce. If the downward spiral is not averted, then the 19 percent projected growth in the field of nursing will not be met.

The study has shown that the most affected type of health care facility is the specialized hospitals where the shortage rate has blown to a high 5.1 percent. Acute case hospitals on the other also are experiencing a high shortage rate of 3.9 percent. Major shortage in nurses is also being felt in some of the most complex departments in these hospitals namely the emergency room, the pediatric department and home health sector.  The departments that are not experiencing any significant nursing shortage percentage are physiotherapy department, nursery departments, post-partum departments and special skills nursing.

But looking at the problem starting 24 years back, the state has shown marked improvement in dealing with this problem. All in all the 4.1 shortage percentage has been recorded which is just slightly higher than that of the present. Unfortunately, the shortage problem has become bigger and if the state government fails to answer this, then Massachusetts will experience an all time high in shortage of nurses starting next year.

There are 24 nursing schools scattered all over the state. This is actually a good number and all of these are acknowledged by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Unfortunately, these nursing schools had to turn their backs on 4,495 nursing applicants because of the shortage in nursing staff in the faculty. With this fact in mind, the demand for nurse educators is also at a high rate. Today, among the 121,469 registered nurses in the state, only about 8.2 percent are advanced practical nurses. These are tha main reasons why Massachusetts is now exerting a lot of effort to entice people to take up nursing and for registered nurses to take up post graduate courses to enhance their knowledge and prepare them for the tougher jobs ahead. There is also conscious efforts in concentrating on the healthcare needs of those living in the 45 medically unserved portions of the state. These areas are where 56.71 percent of the populous of Massachusetts can be found.

State officials have laid out the structure for better compensation for their nurses and hope that this will attract the current workforce to develop their nursing skills more. Te median income they offer in the state is well above national standards. The exact figures doled out are based on some criteria in which experience is almost always at the top of the list. Other important factors that dictate the amount of compensation are the employer and the location of the health facility where the nurse is employed. Nurses who are employed within the Cambridge and Boston areas receive the highest compensation packages in the whole of Massachusetts. The problem is that the rural parts are where the nurses’ compensation is at its lowest, and these are the areas where shortage of nurses is being experienced. This is where the problem is. And this is where the state officials need to focus on.
