Morris J. and Betty Kaplun were former refugees at the time of the Nazi prosecution. Because of this experience in their lives, the Kapluns decided to commit their lives to be of service to other people by doing different philanthropic works such as the creation of The Morris J. and Betty Kaplun Foundation Essay Contest.
This Kaplun foundation provides different types of grants in various fields such as education, science and charity. The Morris J. and Betty Kaplun Foundation Essay Contest is an essay contest that is open to the junior and senior high school students, which aside from providing monetary prizes that can help them fund their education, is also meant to inspire young individuals to give importance to their Jewish roots, as well as its values and for the young people to better understand and further grasp Jewish contributions to both civilization and culture.
The essays that will be written by the junior and senior high school participants will have a variety of topics that is of course related to the Jewish faith. All essay entries must be postmarked by March, and winners are expected to be announced by the month of June. Prizes for the Morris J. and Betty Kaplun Foundation Essay Contest are worth $750 and $1,800. The prizes will be given together with the $18 awards for the first 50 participants on each level.
