The Illinois AMVETS Sad Sacks Nursing Scholarship grants one-year scholarships with varying amounts.

The State of Illinois is one of the many states that have been encouraging high school graduates to take up college courses in the field of health care in recognition of the acute shortage of health care professionals nationwide. To help the state toward this end, the Illinois American Veterans Organization, the fourth largest congressionally chartered Veterans Organization in the country, launched the Illinois AMVETS Sad Sacks Nursing Scholarship program.

The Illinois AMVETS Sad Sacks Nursing Scholarship was created for Illinois high school seniors who have been accepted into a pre-approved college nursing program and for students who are already enrolled in an approved nursing school in the state of Illinois. Qualification for this scholarship will be dependent on the applicants proving their satisfactory academic record, character, interest and activity record, and financial need. The scholarship will be limited to student nurses-in-training. Priority to the scholarship program will be given to dependents of disabled or deceased veterans.
