Texas Outstanding Rural Scholar Recognition and Forgiveness Loan Program

The Texas Outstanding Rural Scholar Recognition and Forgiveness Loan Program is a loan forgiveness program that encourages communities in the rural areas to develop their own nurses as well as health care professionals such as the fields of medicine, dentistry, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, chiropractic, behavioral health as well as allied health.

Once chosen as a recipient for the Texas Outstanding Rural Scholar Recognition and Forgiveness Loan Program, the student must agree to work for an entire year for every year that he or she received a loan. Recipients for this scholarship program are carefully selected which is why the potential applicants are required to possess all the necessary qualifications such as being a resident of Texas, and that he or she must be nominated and sponsored by an organization in the state of Texas’ rural county.

For medical students though, the applicant is required to finish a residency program in any of the following areas such as family practice, emergency medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, general surgery or general obstetrics and gynecology. Apart from the already mentioned requirements, the applicant must also have a grade point average of no less than 3.0 for those in the college level.

Students who are eligible to apply for the Texas Outstanding Rural Scholar Recognition and Forgiveness Loan Program must be aware of the deadlines set by this scholarship program. For the Fall Semester, the deadline is on the 3rd Friday of May, while for the Spring Semester, the deadline is on the 3rd Friday of September and for the Summer Semester, all applications must be in on or before the 3rd Friday of January.
