The Minnesota Nurse Loan Forgiveness Program was created with the purpose of recruiting as well as retaining health care professionals specifically for the needed areas and facilities in the State of Minnesota. This scholarship program is available to Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses. The scholarship gives $15,000 to selected applicants but must require the students to practice at least 30 hours a week for at least 45 week per year for at least three years. Their place of practice must be at any licensed nursing home or any intermediate care facility for the mentally retarded (ICF/MR) in the state of Minnesota. Deadline for applying is on the 1st of December and is open to any Minnesota resident.
Scholarships such as these are important both the state and its residents as it is beneficial for both parties involved. For those applying for the grant, they will be given a hefty sum that can greatly help them in their studies. The required service time after graduation is typically of no consequence to most since most plan to practice their profession somewhere nearby as well.
For the State of Minnesota, this actually holds a much more bigger importance than just helping their constituents. In essence, this is a direct response to the lack and shortage of competent health care providers. They encourage students to take up advanced courses. By helping them financially, they are motivating more of them to work and stay in the state which increases the overall medical staff in the area.
