The Hawai’i Community Foundation has established a scholarship foundation that aims to help those nursing students that are experiencing some financial difficulties. The name of the scholarship fund is the Margaret Jones Memorial Nursing Funds. There some requirements that the student applicant must be able to satisfy. First is that the student applicant must be enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or an MSN course in either University of Hawai’i, Mania or at the University of Hawai’i, Hilo or in Hawai’i Pacific University. These students may also be enrolled in a Doctorate nursing program in any school in Hawai’i or mainland USA.
This scholarship fund was founded in the year 1917 and had its’ start in a concert as a fund raising activity. This concert was organized by the Hawai’i Nurses Club which was later on renamed the Hawai’i Nurses Association. The sales from the said concert were the funds used to establish the scholarship. Margaret Jones, whom the scholarship was named after, was an American nurse killed in World War I when the warship she was serving on was sunk by the Germans. Through this scholarship, there have been a lot of student nurses that have benefitted from this.
The monetary value varies from year to year. The deadline of applications is on the 1st of March. The student applicant must maintain at least a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher. The student applicant must be a certified resident of the state of Hawai’i.
