The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation is a public charity that provides assistance for education and for elderly care of women in nine Southeastern states. The resources of the foundation are devoted to select elderly care facilities in Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia but most of the resources go towards the Lettie Pate Whitehead scholarship program.
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation was established by Conkey Pate Whitehead, youngest son of Lettie Pate Whitehead. It was established as a memorial to his mother who was an extraordinary philanthropist and businesswoman. Lettie was the wife of Joseph B. Whitehead, one of the original bottlers of Coca-Cola. When Joseph Whitehead died at an early age, Lettie Pate took over the bottling business and real estate interests, guiding both endeavors to success. She became one of the first female directors of a major American corporation when The Coca-Cola Company appointer her in 1934 to its board.
Mrs. Lettie Pate Whitehead contributed generously to educational institutions throughout her life. She also showed empathy for elderly women in need. When she passed away, The Coca-Cola Company honored her thus:”Endowed with material things, she had a conviction that she held them as trustee for the poor, the meek and the unfortunate.”
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation has awarded more than $496 million in grant since its establishment in 1946 for the “aid and benefit of poor and needy Christian girls and women” in nine states.
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarship Fund is the major beneficiary of the resources of the foundation. It provides scholarship grants to deserving female students with financial need at more than 200 colleges, universities, and schools. The scholarship fund was established at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. The awards are given to first year female bridge students from Southern states.
