The shortage of nurses in the United States can be felt in all of the healthcare sectors. To encourage more students to enroll in the nursing program, many professional and business organizations grant scholarships to high school seniors who are intent in pursuing a profession in the healthcare field, especially in nursing.
The Georgia Nurses Association and Foundation awards two scholarships to qualified applicants enrolled in nursing program in an accredited school, college, or university. The applicants may be enrolled either full-time or part-time in a graduate or undergraduate nursing program. Applicants must have a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale in prior academic work and be able to verify financial need. The foundation’s scholarship funds are obtained through the tax-deductible contributions of nurses and supporters of nursing.
One of the scholarship programs sponsored by the Georgia Nurses Foundation is the Katherine Pope Scholarship. The scholarship program was established in honor of Ms. Katherine Pope whose nursing career spanned 45 years. Katherine Pope, RN, dedicated her life to the nursing profession. She was described as “the ideal nurse: a selfless, genuine caregiver who puts the needs of others ahead of herself.” She believed that nursing enabled her to best serve her country, her fellow human beings, and the community.
The Katherine Pope Scholarship demonstrates the impact nursing can make to health care and to the community and extends Ms. Pope’s commitment to the career advancement of nurses.
Applicants to the Katherine Pope Scholarship must be residents of Georgia, and currently enrolled in an accredited program in nursing. Priority will be given to students in Georgia school, college or university and who plan to practice professional nursing in Georgia following graduation.
The scholarship awards financial grant of up to $1,000. It is awarded every odd year only.
