Jane L. Watson Nursing Scholarship

A survey conducted in 2013 by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers showed that fifty five percent of Registered Nurses in the U. S. workforce are age 50 or older. The Health Resources and Services Administration made a projection that more than a million Registered Nurses will retire within the next ten to fifteen years. These figures clearly show a bleak situation for the nursing profession in the coming years. To avert a disastrous scenario where the health care sector will have a severe shortage of nurses, both professional and business organizations are taking steps to encourage more high graduates to enroll in nursing programs in the college level.

The Jane L. Watson Nursing Scholarship was established at the University of Missouri’s Sinclair School of Nursing to attract more students into the nursing profession. The scholarship fund was set up by David C. Watson and his brothers Carl and James in honor of their mother Jane who was a 1943 graduate of the Sinclair Nursing School.

The scholarship program provides one or more annual awards to a student or students who are enrolled in the undergraduate nursing program. First preference to the scholarship is given to a graduate of Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri. Second preference is given to a graduate of Rock Bridge High School student. Final preference is given to a student from any high school in Boone County, Missouri.

Applying for the scholarship is very easy. There is no need to apply for individual internal scholarships. Applicants need to submit the scholarship application for his or her degree program to the Sinclair School of Nursing Office of Student Affairs. Once the application is received, the applicant will be eligible for any scholarship to which he or she meets the eligibility criteria. All Sinclair School of Nursing students need to have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid on their files.
