Indian Health Service Health Professions Scholarship Program

The Indian Health Service Health Professions Scholarship Program provides qualified American Indian and Alaska Native health professions student the opportunity to establish a solid educational foundation for each stage of their pre-professional careers. The Indian Health Service started providing scholarship support to American Indian and Alaska Native health profession students in 1978 and has extended its support program to include providing health care services to the medically underserved Indian health programs nationwide.
Since 1978, more than 7,000 American Indian and Alaska Native students in the health profession field had received scholarship grants with many of the awardees returning to serve their own Tribal communities.
The Indian Health Services offers three scholarship programs to American Indian and Alaska Native students in the field of health profession as follows:

  • Preparatory Scholarship – It provides financial aid to qualified American Indian and Alaska Native undergraduate students in the field of health profession.
  • Pre-Graduate Scholarship –It provides financial aid to qualified American Indian and Alaska Native undergraduate students who are enrolled in courses leading to a bachelor’s degree in pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-podiatry and other subjects needed by the Indian health programs.
  • Health Professions Scholarship – It provides financial aid to qualified American Indian and Alaska Native undergraduate and graduate-level students in the field of health profession.

Applicants to the scholarship programs must eligibility requirements as follows:

  • Must be United States citizen (US-born or naturalized) or US national.
  • Applicants for Preparatory and Pre-Graduate Scholarships must be a member or descendant of a federally recognized, state-recognized or terminated American Indian Tribe or Alaska Native village. Applicants for the Health Professions Scholarship must be a member of a federally recognized American Indian Tribe or Alaska Native village only.
  • Applicants must be high school graduate or the equivalent with a minimum of 2.0 GPA, must be capable of completing a health profession degree program and must show commitment to serve the Indian people as a health professional in the chosen discipline.
