The Vanderbilt University School of Nursing grants several scholarship awards every year to students in specialties that involve nursing care for children of any age – from neonate through adolescent. The scholarship awards are granted through the Hilliard Travis Scholarship Fund that is supported by the generosity of Mrs. Nancy Travis and her late husband, Hilliard Travis.
The nursing scholarship program at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, and with the bequest for research at the Monroe Carrel Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University, are some of the Travis couple’s legacy and dedication to scholarship and research in children’s health, impacting students, patients, families and society on a global level.
Prior to the creation of the Hilliard Travis Scholarship Fund, the Travis couple, a pair of successful self-made businessman and a pioneering nurse, endowed the Nancy and Hilliard Travis Chair in Nursing at Vanderbilt University and provided scholarships for 447 nursing students.
The Hilliard Travis Scholarship Fund offers 6 full tuition scholarships each year at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. It also offers a number of partial scholarships. To be considered for the scholarship, a student at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing must have full-time enrollment which is equivalent to 12 hours per semester although some specialty programs that require less than 12 hours per semester may also be considered for full scholarship. Part-time nursing students and post-graduate students are ineligible for scholarships. They may, however, qualify for student loans under the scholarship fund.
The grant of scholarship, both full and partial, to first year nursing students shall be based on the applicant’s GPA and GRE, GMAT and other standardized test score. The maintenance of scholarship for a second year nursing scholar shall be based on the student’s GPA for the first two semesters in the nursing program. To continue with the scholarship, a student who will be entering the specialty year must have earned a 4.0 in the first and second semesters.
