The Beginning

Porter Adventist Hospital, located in the Harvard Park area of Denver, is a 368-bed full-service, acute care hospital that specializes in spine surgery, joint replacement, behavioral health, organ transplant, cancer care, and cardiac treatment. History of the Hospital

The hospital was built in 1930 by Henry Porter, a Denver businessman, who was treated at Seventh – day Adventist sanatoriums when he became ill while on a trip in California. He donated in 1930 money and land that was used to build the Porter Adventist Hospital. The hospital served the Denver community as the country went into the Great Depression.

In 1996, Porter Adventist Hospital became part of the Centura Health, the largest health care and hospital network in Colorado. The hospital completed its $110 million renovation and expansion project in 2007. The expansion provided the highest level of medical patient care by adding a brand new emergency department. It became in 2014 a Level 3 trauma center.

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services is a 522-bed, full service, acute care facility which includes Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center.  Penrose-St. Francis has been designated as one of “America’s 50 Best Hospital by Healthgrades every year from 2008 to 2005. Penrose-St. Francis Health Services started as the Glockner Tuberculosis Sanatorium, established by Marie Gynne Glockner after her husband Albert died from tuberculosis. The hospital’s first superintendent, Dr. B. P. Anderson founded the St. Francis Hospital. The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, Ohio assumed the hospital’s ownership in 1893. The congregation also had hospitals and sanatoriums in Pueblo, Colorado and Albuquerque in New Mexico.

The hospital’s name was changed to Glockner-Penrose Hospital in 1947 with Julie Penrose donating $3.2 million for the hospital’s expansion. In 1949, the name was changed again into Penrose Hospital. The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, Ohio and St. Francis of Colorado Springs were consolidated into one organization in 1990 to become the Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. In 1995, the Sisters of Charity Health Services Colorado and the Porter Care Adventist Health System formed the nonprofit health system across Colorado – Century Health – that is the largest health care and hospital network in Colorado.
